My local dealership doesn't carry the correct plug for the Savage, so I am running a plus one. The backfiring is worse, the bike runs rougher, idle quality has gone down. Don't run the hotter plug unless you are advised to do so for a sound mechanical reason.
Heat range in this case ferers to the cooling rate of the plug, not the size of the spark. A larger spark is obtained by running a Splitfire, Accel, NGK, or other enhanced spark path plug, be it grooved or multi electrode. However, DO NOT use an AC Delco rapid-fire, it not only can but likely will scramble the electronics in your ignition system.
